STD testing is available for most sexually transmitted diseases. Find out where there are std tests for STDs like a Syphilis test or a Gonorrhea test. Syphilis is caused by the bacterium ‘spirochetal’. It is transmitted almost solely through sexual contact although there are instances of congenital syphilis that a baby gets from an infected mother. Symptoms of syphilis include lesions called chancre at the point of contact like the genitalia, rashes on the soles of the feet or palms, malaise, fever and weight loss. More serious forms can lead to neuropathic joint disease. The disease can damage the aorta, heart, bones, eyes and brain if left untreated. Since the symptoms are numerous, it is difficult to identify and can be mistaken for other forms of STD. Treatment includes courses of antibiotics like penicillin. The test to identify syphilis is the ‘Syphilis Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) Test’. This test needs a blood sample to be taken by a professional and hence no at-home kits are available. The test will identify the antibodies produced by the body to fight syphilis. Even previous attacks of syphilis can still give a positive result. Test yourself every 6 months if you feel have been exposed to the infection.
